Pro-Life Victory in Indian Health Services
By
February 2008
Dear Friends,
Thanks to your efforts, we scored a huge pro-life victory today!! The Senate just passed (52-42) Senator David Vitter's (R-Louisiana) amendment to the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, S. 1200, that would codify a longstanding provision and ban taxpayer funding of abortions at Indian health care service facilities.
The Hyde amendment restricts the federal funding of abortion through Medicaid, but this policy did not apply to the Indian Health Services (IHS) because it was funded through a different appropriations bill. IHS continued to pay for abortion-on-demand until 1982 when the Reagan administration curbed the practice. While this policy of not funding abortions through IHS has been in effect for 25 years, the Vitter amendment guarantees that future administrations don't circumvent Congress and change this policy.
We could not have done this without your help! This amendment ensures that IHS does not use government funds to pay for abortion-on-demand.
The Senate is expected to pass the entire bill later today and then it will go to the House for consideration.
We will continue to update you on this legislation.
Sincerely,

Wendy Wright
President
