Dear Friends,

On Wednesday, four out of seven Blue Dog Democrats - Representatives Mike Ross (Arkansas), Zack Space (Ohio), Baron Hill (Indiana) and Bart Gordon (Tennessee) - responsible for stalling the government takeover of health care bill caved in the face of pressure exerted by the Democrat House Leadership and Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman (California).

Despite the "compromise," this will be the biggest takeover of health care in American history. The overwhelming cost of this legislation is staggering. Blue Dogs, who are already getting heat for voting with the Democrat leadership on the Stimulus Package and Cap and Trade bills, need to hear that the deal they made does not fundamentally change the bill. The so-called deal will supposedly reduce the proposed subsidies and entitlement expansions by $100 billion which is only about 6 percent of the $1.6 trillion in total federal spending in the bill. It will not even halve the $239 billion deficit projected by the Congressional Budget Office.

The public option, although minimally changed, is still included in the Democrats' government-run health care bill. While President Obama and House Democrat leadership claim their plan is merely a "public option" which targets the uninsured and that Americans will still be able to choose their own doctor, insurance company and treatments, the reality is that the President's health care reform bill guarantees an eventual take-over of health care by the government. Private insurance providers will be unable to compete with government-run health care because it will not be competing on a level playing field. The government, under its new agency, the "Health Choices Administration," will enforce insurance plan standards, distribute taxpayer subsidies, and determine fines for non-compliant individuals, plans, and employers as well as other directives. The bill also bans the sale of individual market health plans outside of the exchange - the "grandfathering" in of people currently on these plans is a gimmick as these plans aren't allowed to add new individuals, cover new items or change the rates - thus they will wither on the vine destroying private insurance markets over time.

Also, a government board will determine what treatments can and cannot be allowed. Doctors will be prevented from providing health care tailored to an individual's needs and instead will be required to provide only limited one-size-fits-all treatments. This means all of us, especially the elderly and disabled, will have less access to the kind of health care we need.

Even more distressing, this legislation includes government-coerced euthanasia for the elderly by mandating end-of-life counseling (such as lecturing them about the right to hasten their own death by refusing nutrition).

This legislation will also create a fundamental right to abortion in our health care system. The health care legislation will mandate and subsidize abortion coverage in American health plans, would nullify state laws that limit abortion, and require "access" to elective abortions which would result in more abortion clinics. It would require doctors, health care providers and hospitals, including faith-based, to provide abortions.

Take Action Now:

1. Call your Representative and tell him/her to oppose health care reform that mandates abortions, encourages euthanasia and creates government-controlled health care. Also tell them not to be fooled by fake compromises that are likely on abortion, that is, compromises that don't have the support from the bipartisan leaders of the pro-life caucus.

2. Call Representative Mike Ross - 202-225-3772, Representative Zack Space - 202-225-6265, Representative Baron Hill - 202-225-5315 and Representative Bart Gordon - 202-225-4231 and tell them their "compromise" does not help American families - it does not reduce the costs and still ensures government takeover of our health care system.

Wendy Wright
