Dear Friends,
The massive new U.S. Capitol Visitor Center opens Tuesday, December 2. This $600 million structure is dedicated to retelling America's history, however, it fails to accurately portray our Judeo-Christian history and we need your help to ensure changes to the Capitol Visitor Center are made.
The Capitol Visitor Center is about 2/3 the size of the U.S. Capitol. Up to 20,000 visitors each day - including thousands of school children - will go through this underground structure which displays the 200-year history of the Capitol. Initially, the Architect of the Capitol, who had oversight responsibility for the bulk of the construction, virtually eliminated references to God and the role of faith in the history of Capitol.
After a handful of Congressional leaders led by Representative Randy Forbes (R-Virginia) and Senator Jim DeMint (R-South Carolina) raised a ruckus, an agreement was reached to make the following changes:
- The phrase "Our Nation's Motto" be removed from the plaque describing the engraving of E Pluribus Unum;
- "In God We Trust" be engraved in stone in a prominent location within the Capitol Visitor Center and that the panel describing the engraving include the proper recognition of this phrase as our national motto;
- That the Pledge of Allegiance be engraved in stone in a prominent location within the Capitol Visitor Center.
While temporary alterations have been made to the Capitol Visitor Center in accordance with the agreement, much remains to be done. Historical buildings like the Capitol Visitor Center should tell the story of our nation. When religious history is removed from these displays, the public - American and foreign - is not able to experience an accurate depiction of our nation's history.
Action:
- Please call the Architect of the Capitol at 202-228-1793 and ask him to engrave "In God We Trust" and the Pledge of Allegiance in stone in a prominent location within the Capitol Visitors Center in accordance with the agreement reached.
- Please call your Representative and your Senators at 202-224-3121 and urge them to be vigilant in their efforts to oversee the Capitol Visitor Center and ensure that unelected bureaucrats do not ignore the role and prominence of God and faith in our Nation's history.
- Please call Committee on House Administration Chairman Robert Brady (D-Pennsylvania) at 202-225-4731 and Ranking Member Vernon Ehlers (R-Michigan) at 202-225-3831 and ask them to follow through with their commitment to research and develop a permanent religious history display and to construct it in the Capitol Visitor Center as soon as possible.
