Talking Points: Parental Notification and Intervention Act, H.R. 1295
August 20, 2008
- Eighty percent of Americans agree that parents should have the right to stop an abortion from being performed on their minor daughters.
- Parents must consent before their child can receive aspirin at school or go on a field trip, but that same child can be taken across state lines and coerced into obtaining an abortion.
- Thirty states have parental notification laws. However, all too often, adults ignore these laws in an effort to facilitate an abortion for the young expectant mother.
- This bill protects young girls facing unexpected motherhood from the pressure of outside parties to terminate their pregnancy.
- Performing abortions without parental notification puts girls at high risk for life-threatening complications.
- Since the girl's medical history of the abortion could be unknown or secret, doctors could have difficulty treating an arising complication.
- H.R. 1295 protects our children and ensures they are not making adult decisions without the guidance and wisdom of their parents.
