Dear Friends,

Next week, the House will consider two bills that make it possible to establish off-reservation Indian casinos. Please call your Representative at 202-225-3121 and ask him/her to oppose building new casinos. Gambling is destructive and undermines family stability.

Historically, Congress has never authorized the establishment and operation of off-reservation casinos. These bills would override current law in the Indian Gambling Regulatory Act, setting a dangerous precedent authorizing the settlement of certain land claims for both the Bay Mills Indian Community and the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians to build casinos hundreds of miles away from their reservations.

Casino gambling poses a number of dangers for our culture in general and the overall well-being of families in particular. Recent studies have shown that more women gamble than men and women who are problem gamblers have a two to three times higher incidence of substance dependence than other women according to one report. Even more distressing is a Harvard Medical School report which found that gambling disorders were "significantly more prevalent among young people."

Please call your Representatives today at 202-225-3121 and ask them to oppose H.R. 4115 and H.R. 2176. Gambling shatters families and is bad social policy.

Sincerely,

Wendy Wright
President
