Concerned Women for America (CWA) recently participated in a prayer vigil and press conference led by Students for Life of America, African-American pastors and community leaders, and Congressman Trent Franks (R-Arizona), calling for greater attention to recent incidents linking racism and abortion at Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation. Recently circulated YouTube videos expose Planned Parenthood staff members on audio agreeing to accept donations for purely racist reasons. To see one of the videos, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LJVPVh5TWo.
By exposing the racist views upon which Planned Parenthood was founded, pro-life leaders are urging Congress to kill funding to Planned Parenthood, which received $300 million in government contracts and grants in the current fiscal year.
Representative Franks recently began circulating a “Dear Colleague” letter which spoke of the recent criminal investigations and questionable business practices of Planned Parenthood and called for other members to join him in efforts to prohibit federal funds from going to this organization. Representative Mike Pence (R-Indiana) introduced an amendment with the intent of prohibiting Planned Parenthood from receiving Title X funds. Unfortunately, the amendment failed this summer by a vote of 189-231.
The purpose of the demonstration by CWA and other groups was not only to send the message that the pro-life community is fed up with paying for the racist legacy and questionable business practices of Planned Parenthood, but also to pray and seek the Lord on behalf of the tens of millions of innocent unborn lives taken at the hands of Planned Parenthood-funded (and thus, taxpayer-funded) abortionists.
Concerned Women for America President Wendy Wright says, “Planned Parenthood has been mired in scandal since its inception and faces criminal charges now, and yet it rakes in obscene amounts of money from the government. Taxpayers should not be forced to subsidize this controversial organization that is legitimately accused of racism.”
Pro-life pastors spoke of the hypocrisy of “present day civil rights activists” such as the Rev. Al Sharpton and their failure to denounce the racist actions of Planned Parenthood with as much persistence and enthusiasm as they did in calling for the firing of radio talk show host Don Imus’ over racially charged remarks he made.
Members of the black community are fed up not only with the hypocrisy of supposed present day civil rights activists, but also their continued negligence in addressing the public funding of an organization whose racist roots continue to negatively impact the African-American community today. Day Gardner, president of the national Black Pro-Life Union and one of 30 leaders who signed a letter addressing the profound effect abortion is having on the African-American community, stated, “African-Americans are having abortions at a hugely disproportionate rate according to their population, and Planned Parenthood has no shame whatsoever in accepting money that specifically targets our community.”
Margaret Sanger’s legacy of influencing the greatest and most harmful change in societal views on birth control and abortion has become the basis of justification for murdering the unborn under the guise of “family planning.” “The truth is that the political left’s almost religious adherence to a policy of abortion-on-demand has unleashed abortion doctors to kill unborn babies almost indiscriminately in the black community,” say conservative author Jerome R. Corsi and former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell in their article titled, “The Left Practices Genocide by Abortion.”
Planned Parenthood has repeatedly denied its racist roots and questionable business practices over the years, but the bloodshed of over 13 million African-American babies exposes its true mission. We cannot ignore the facts. It is time for Americans to speak up and demand that the government stop funding Planned Parenthood’s racist agenda of death.
