Dear Friends,
Representative Frank Pallone (D-New Jersey), Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee Chair, will hold a hearing on Thursday, May 8, 2008, to promote wasting taxpayer monies to conduct deadly embryonic stem cell research (ESCR).
Despite the fact that ESCR has yielded zero cures or treatments, Representative Pallone is touting ESCR as the “foundation for future cures.” While adult stem cells are non-controversial and are being used in human treatments for at least 73 diseases and disorders, many in Congress want taxpayer funds to be applied to ESCR, which requires the destruction of human embryos and has no human applications.
Proponents of ESCR are shamefully pushing ESCR as necessary to treat human ailments. In addition to blatantly disregarding the fact that adult stem cells are the only ones that can treat patients, they also ignore ethical and promising advances in stem cell research where scientists in Japan and Wisconsin have generated induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells with the properties of human embryonic stem cells by directly reprogramming adult cells.
This hearing may have a detrimental impact on whether taxpayers will be forced to subsidize this destructive research. Vociferous proponents on the Health Subcommittee include Representatives Henry Waxman (D-California) and Diana DeGette (D-Colorado), the House author of the embryo destructive research legislation that was vetoed by the President. Pro-life members on the Health Subcommittee need to offset the destructive ESCR message with the pro-life and pro-patient message.
Please call (202-225-3121) or e-mail pro-life Subcommittee Members Nathan Deal (R-Georgia), Ralph Hall (R-Texas), Barbara Cubin (R-Wyoming), John Shadegg (R-Arizona), Steve Buyer (R-Indiana), Michael Ferguson (R-New Jersey), Michael Rogers (R-Michigan), Sue Myrick (R-North Carolina), John Sullivan (R-Oklahoma), Tim Murphy (R-Pennsylvania), Michael Burgess (R-Texas) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee), and ask them to attend Thursday’s hearing and expose the truth about destructive ESCR.
Below you will find suggested language to help you respond quickly on this pressing matter.
Sincerely,
The Legislative Department

Dear Representative,
As one of Concerned Women for America’s 500,000 members, I want to encourage you to attend this Thursday’s hearing “Stem Cell Science: The Foundation for Future Cures.” Federal funding of destructive embryonic stem cell research is unethical, and to date, has yielded zero cures or treatments in humans! By contrast, there are 73 cures and treatments from the use of adult and cord blood stem cells. Furthermore, this destructive and unethical research is wholly unnecessary, since scientists in Japan and Wisconsin have generated stem cells that are “embryonic-like” by reprogramming adult cells.
Sincerely,
