Dear Friends,

Great news!  After holding judicial nominees hostage for the entire year, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) has agreed to confirm three of President Bush’s circuit court judicial nominees before the Memorial Day recess.

There is no question that your prayers and support have had a great impact on the issue.

We are writing to you specifically because our records indicate that you live in the area covered by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.  As you probably know, the Fourth Circuit is in dire need of judges, as it is one third vacant and most of the vacant seats are considered “judicial emergencies” by the Judicial Conference of the United States.

President Bush has nominated four extremely well-qualified nominees to serve in the Court of Appeals for the Fourth District.  Three of them were nominated last year, yet nothing has been done on their nominations.  We hope that at least two of the nominees confirmed before the Memorial Day recess come from these three:

Robert Conrad — nominated on July 17, 2007.  He currently serves as Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court of the Western District of North Carolina and is a highly respected jurist who received the American Bar Association’s highest rating of “well qualified.”  He attended Clemson University, where he graduated magna cum laude, and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia Law School.

Steve Matthews — nominated on September 6, 2007.  He is an accomplished attorney who graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina and obtained his J.D. from Yale Law School.  Mr. Matthews has held a variety of high-ranking positions at the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and received DOJ’s Special Achievement Award for his performance as Executive Assistant to the Attorney General.

Rod Rosenstein — nominated on November 15, 2007.  He currently serves as U.S. attorney in Maryland and has a distinguished record in public service as a litigator.  Mr. Rosenstein received his B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating summa cum laude, and his J.D. from Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude.   Following his graduation from law school, Mr. Rosenstein clerked for the Honorable Douglas H. Ginsburg of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Please call and/or write Sen. Reid and encourage him to stick to his promise to confirm three of President Bush’s circuit court nominees before the Memorial Day recess.  And ask him to help bring judicial stability back for the people of the Fourth Circuit by confirming at least two of the three judges he has promised, to the Fourth Circuit.

Sample Letter to the Senator Reid

Dear Senator Reid,

As a Fourth Circuit citizen and a member of Concerned Women for America (CWA), I want to thank you for your pledge to confirm three of President Bush’s circuit court judicial nominees before the Memorial Day recess.

As you are well aware, our circuit is one third vacant at this moment and we are in desperate need of good judges to help carry the caseload.  While partisan politics in Washington continue to delay judicial confirmations, the citizens and businesses of the Fourth Circuit are paying the price.

President Bush has nominated several excellent nominees to the Fourth District and they should all get an up-or-down vote.  Judge Robert Conrad, Steve Mathews and Rod Rosenstein have been waiting since last year for the Senate to act.

Do the right thing for the people of the Fourth Circuit, and confirm at least two of these nominees in order to bring down the number of judicial emergencies in our circuit.

Sincerely,
