 | | Dear Friends,
We need your help on two important items!
1. We have an opportunity which comes along once every ten years to ensure tax dollars won't pay for abortions-on-demand in Indian Health Services. When the Senate comes back on February 25, it will resume consideration of the Indian Health Care Improvement Act, S. 1200. Two amendments will be considered side-by-side that will determine whether we as a nation stand for life.
The first amendment offered by Senator David Vitter (R-Louisiana) will codify a longstanding policy against funding abortions with federal Indian Health Service (IHS) funds except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest.
The second, a Democrat alternative, could open the door on taxpayer monies being used to fund abortion on demand. This amendment states, "Nothing in this Act shall be construed to effect or otherwise modify provisions of current Federal law with respect to the funding of abortion." If passed, this abortion amendment will negate Senator Vitter's pro-life amendment.
Action: Please call your Senators today at 202-224-3121 and ask them to support the Vitter Amendment and oppose the Democrat alternative.
2. The United States is now more vulnerable to terrorist attacks since the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) expired on Saturday, February 16. According to House Republican Leader John Boehner, "intelligence officials have asked Congress to provide them the tools they need to protect us, but the Democratic Majority has turned a deaf ear. Instead of working with Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats to protect our country by passing the bipartisan Senate FISA modernization bill, the Majority turned the House floor into the scene of a partisan political stunt."
If FISA is not strengthened, intelligence officials will need to go through a cumbersome court process before they can conduct surveillance on suspected foreign terrorists. Foreigners are not entitled to the Constitutional protections provided to Americans and we should not tie our officials' hands so they cannot protect us.
"Some in the majority may have forgotten how the old FISA law failed the nation in 2001, but it was only last year that it failed our soldiers kidnapped in Iraq," said Representative Pete Hoekstra (R-Michigan), the top Republican on the House Intelligence Committee. "To ignore the real world costs of not reforming our terrorist surveillance laws is to invite only more tragedy and suffering. The failure of Congress to modernize and strengthen FISA has put our homeland at greater risk, as well as our troops in Afghanistan and Iraq and our allies around the world."
Action: Please call the Representatives below at 202-225-3121 and ask them to support modernizing FISA. Also, please ask them to contact Speaker Pelosi and urge her to bring this to the floor for a vote when the House goes back into session on February 25.
