Running Out of Time

With only one week of this session left, Congress has yet to meet the deadlines for any of its spending deadlines or keep its promises of cultivating a more effective bipartisan Congress.  At the start of the 110th Congress, emboldened by their recent victory at the polls, liberals declared time and again that their leadership would take America in a "new and better direction."  Yet, as we face the close of the first session, liberal leadership claims that conservatives are keeping them from "helping American families attain the American dream."

In fulfilling their promise to address the many challenges at which their predecessors failed, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) have worked hard to name 47 post offices, court houses and roads.  Such non-controversial measures account for nearly half of the bills actually signed into law this year.  Many of the "legislative accomplishments" on which liberals pride themselves provide short-lived benefits with long-terms consequences and significant side effects.  Fortunately, a number of the most harmful bills have made it out of only the House and still need Senate action.

Earlier this year, Congress voted on and passed the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2007.  Thankfully, President Bush vetoed this bill which would have allowed for federal taxpayer dollars to go toward funding unethical and unproductive research that creates and destroys human embryos for research purposes.  Recent adult stem cell research success by Dr. Shinya Yamanaka of Japan further proves that destructive embryonic stem cell research needlessly destroys human life and fails to yield positive results that actually can save lives and give real hope to persons suffering from diseases such as Parkinson's.

Given Congress' all-time lowest approval rate ever recorded, it is evident that the direction in which liberals promised to take the country is no improvement over their predecessors.  Liberal and conservative Members of Congress have not only failed to reach agreement on every one of the FY2008 Appropriations bills, but also on bills such as the Children's Health Insurance Program, which President Bush has now vetoed twice.

Dubbed by some as the "Do Nothing" Congress, liberals promised that when they took over, more work would get done and less time would be wasted.  It is time for liberals to reassess the way in which they measure their success and commit to the principles of cooperation followed by action.

The liberal agenda guiding Congress has sought to redefine and reprioritize America in a direction that many Americans do not want our country to go.  Legislation that promotes homosexuality, universalized government healthcare and a growing hostility toward Christianity have turned this Congress into one that is more concerned with politicizing every issue than getting the job done.
