Act Now to Save Abstinence Education

December 18, 2007

article

Dear Friends,

Congress is getting ready to leave for Christmas and has yet to complete its work!

In September, Congress passed a three-month extension that provided continued funding for Title V, abstinence education, until December 31, 2007. While there is talk on Capitol Hill about extending this funding until June 2008, Congress has yet to take action!

If Title V is not reauthorized for more than a three-month period, it will, for all intents and purposes, kill abstinence education. In fact, since Congress has begun to reauthorize Title V in three-month increments, more states have refused abstinence education funds, which effectively means that only dangerous comprehensive sex education is being funded.

Abstinence education, although relatively new, is working. The recently released Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that liberals are using to undermine abstinence education clearly demonstrates this. Pregnancy rates for teenagers under 15 are half of what they were in 1995, and pregnancy rates for teenagers 15- to 17-years-old declined slightly. Only teenagers between 18-19 had a modest increase from 57.7 (per thousand) in 2004 to 58.4 (per thousand) in 2005 in birth rates.

Don't let the liberals kill abstinence education! Please call 202-224-3121 today and ask your Senators and Representative to extend Title V.

Sincerely,

Wendy Wright
President
