Honoring Henry Hyde: A Giant Is Laid to Rest

On November 29, 2007, America suffered a great loss, the passing of former Congressman Henry Hyde, one of our nation’s most faithful pro-life leaders.  Today, as Mr. Hyde is laid to rest, we pause to remember this pro-life hero.

An advocate for one of the most contentious issues of our time — the right to life — Mr. Hyde will best be remembered for his monumental “Hyde Amendment.”  That law, passed in 1976, was the first piece of pro-life legislation to rein in Roe v. Wade by banning the use of tax dollars to pay for abortions.

Elected to the House of Representatives in 1974, Congressman Hyde (R-Illinois), to the shock and disgust of pro-abortionists, was only a freshman when he attached the amendment to an appropriations bill.

Congressman Hyde’s leadership role on the House International Relations Committee also saved lives.  His leadership helped shoot down several attempts to allow funding of organizations that promote or perform abortions abroad.

Mr. Hyde dedicated his career, his life and his heart to protecting those who lacked the ability to protect themselves.  Pro-life supporters will agree that words such as "hero" and "guardian" come to mind at the mention of his name, but most would also admit that there are no words with which to describe the strength of character that it must have taken for Mr. Hyde to defend the voiceless.

Shari Rendall, Director of Legislation and Public Policy, says, “Representative Henry Hyde was a true crusader.  He protected the most innocent among us, the unborn.  We urge Congress to pass H. Res. 843 to celebrate his life and recognize his contributions to all of humanity.”

Our hearts go out to Congressman Hyde’s family, his loved ones and the voiceless, unborn children he fought to protect.  We will continue to fight your fight, Mr. Hyde, and we will forever say, “thank you.”
