Dear Friends,
Right now networks can blast profanity on television even while your children are watching. The Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act, S. 1780, would allow the FCC to penalize broadcasters for irresponsible programming – yet this bill is being held up!
The Protecting Children from Indecent Programming Act was passed unanimously by Senate Commerce Committee way back in July but has not been sent to the Senate floor because of internal politics.
Please urge Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) and Ranking Member Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) to report this legislation to the floor so it can be voted on before the Senate adjourns for Christmas in a couple of weeks.
This bill is desperately needed to help restore parents’ ability to provide wholesome entertainment without indecent material invading their living room through the TV while their children are watching.
The stakes on this issue could not be any clearer. If this legislation is not passed, the broadcast decency bill we all worked so hard to pass last year will have been for naught thanks to activist judges. Indecent broadcasters and activist courts should not be the ones determining what programming is appropriate for children particularly when their standards do not reflect the majority of American families.
Senators Inouye and Stevens have the ability to let this bill be voted on or to kill it by inaction. They need to uphold their responsibility to protect children and stand up for the appropriate use of the public airwaves.
Action: Please call Senators Inouye at 202-224-3934 and Stevens at 202-224-3004 today and tell them to report S. 1780 to the floor, because profanity should not be shown on public television, especially while children are watching.
