Dear Friends,
Currently, federal regulations prevent American taxpayers' monies from funding abortions for women on Medicaid in Washington, D.C. Some members of Congress wish to change this with a measure that would remove the budget of the District of Columbia from Congressional oversight.
Consideration of H.R. 733 the District of Columbia Budget Autonomy bill began in the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee just before the August recess. Efforts to give the District of Columbia complete autonomy over it federally funded budget raise concerns about federal funding of abortions.
Evidence shows that when taxpayer funds are not available, Medicaid-eligible women do not get abortions, and instead 20-35% carry their babies to term. Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has offered an amendment to protect Americans from federally funding abortions in the District of Columbia.
Please contact members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee while they are home in their districts and urge them to support the Jordan amendment!
Sincerely,
The Legislative Department
