Dear Friends,

Earlier today I sent our State Leaders the information below, and I wanted to share it with you too since so many of you have responded to our e-alerts to protect the sanctity of life!

Dear State Leaders,

Thank you so much for you tremendous efforts to protect life in the Senate Foreign Ops bill!  Last night the Senate voted on several of these pro-life provisions in the Foreign Ops bill, which ultimately ended up passing by a vote of 81-12.

Senator Brownback (R-Kansas) introduced an amendment to reinstate Kemp-Kasten which passed.  Senators Boxer's (D-California) and Snowe's (R-Maine) amendment to gut the Mexico City Policy passed while Senator Brownback's amendment to reinstate the Mexico City failed. (See below for votes).

The President has issued a Statement of Administration Policy (SAP) indicating his intent to veto this legislation. The SAP stated, "The Administration strongly opposes this legislation because it includes provisions that are inconsistent with the Administration's international family planning policy.  Consistent with the President's letter of May 3, 2007, if the President were presented a bill such as H.R. 2764 that weakens current Federal policies and laws on abortion, he would veto the bill."

Your hard work was truly appreciated especially on such short notice!

Kemp-Kasten:

Brownback Amdt #2707 (To prohibit funding of organizations that support coercive abortion.)

VOTE: adopted 48 to 45

Mexico City Policy:

Boxer Amdt #2719 (To prohibit the application of certain restrictive eligibility requirements to foreign nongovernmental organizations with respect to the provision of assistance under part I of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961.)

VOTE: adopted 53 to 41

Brownback Amdt #2708 (To prevent contributions to organizations that perform or promote abortion as a method of family planning.)

VOTE: rejected 41 to 53

Blessings,
