Dear Friends,

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) broke his promise to the American people when he did not allow the entire Senate to vote on Judge Leslie Southwick's nomination to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit before the Memorial Day recess.

It's now time to hold Sen. Reid accountable for his second promise to vote on Judge Southwick's confirmation, which he made before they adjourned.

Liberals in the Senate will do everything in their power to obstruct judicial nominations. Their mantra during the Clinton years was that every judicial nominee deserved an up-and-down vote. Now, that argument has been strangely muted! It is absolutely unfair to both Judge Southwick and American citizens to string this qualified judge’s confirmation along.

Judge Southwick's impressive credentials bear out his eminently qualified status for the federal bench. He has served our country with distinction and honor as an Iraq War veteran and is rated "unanimously well-qualified" by the American Bar Association.

He also ruled on 7,000 cases during 12 years on the Mississippi Court of Appeals and came highly recommended by Senators Trent Lott and Thad Cochran. By all reasonable accounts, Judge Southwick is exceptionally qualified and should be immediately confirmed.

Regrettably, Judge Southwick has become the target of a shameless and deceptive smear campaign by homosexual and liberal groups. It speaks well of Judge Southwick that his critics have only found two cases during his entire judgeship on the Mississippi Court of Appeals to hone in on – and their fabricated criticism does not stand up to scrutiny. His qualifications and integrity speak louder than his critics.

The tactics used to smear him and his record do nothing more than prolong the vacancies on our federal courts and are a disservice to Americans whose cases are languishing. America would do well to have a judge like Leslie Southwick on the bench. Please call your Senators on Wednesday, September 5 at 202-224-3121, and tell them you want Judge Southwick's nomination to be considered by the full Senate immediately!

Sincerely,

The Legislative Department
