When the Senate reconvenes on April 10, it will likely consider the star print version of S. 5, a bill to use taxpayer money for destructive embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). (A star print bill is a revised print of a bill, amendment or committee report that is used to correct mistakes or omissions in an earlier version.) Sponsored by Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada), this star print version of the bill includes provisions to encourage research into certain alternative forms of stem cell research and is substantially similar to the ESCR bill that President Bush vetoed last Congress. Senator Reid hopes this revised language will encourage senators who previously opposed S. 5 to change their vote. His goal is to attract additional support for S. 5 so that he will have enough votes in the Senate to override an anticipated Presidential veto. The vote on ESCR is becoming less of a vote about whether legislators truly believe taxpayer money should be used for destructive embryonic research and more about political maneuvering. Right now, both parties question whether the Senate can sustain a presidential veto, and it appears that many Senators are being pressured to vote in favor of S. 5. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that you contact your Senators while they are in their districts and urge them to vote NO on this legislation. Please remind them that embryonic stem cell research is not currently against the law, but if scientists wish to experiment with a failed and immoral research method, they should use private funds and not your taxpayer money to do it!
