Dear Friends,

This week the Senate will consider S. 5, a bill to use taxpayer money for destructive embryonic stem cell research (ESCR). This legislation sponsored by Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) is substantially similar to the ESCR bill that President Bush vetoed last Congress.

In anticipation of another Presidential veto and a possible veto override in the Senate, Senate leadership will consider and pass its own bill rather than the one the House already passed in January. The House will then likely pass the Senate version of ESCR which the President has already said he will veto. The Senate, which is closer to a veto override, will then get the proverbial "first bite at the apple" in their attempt to override the President's veto. Senate leadership hopes this tactic will provide momentum for a House override vote.

The vote on ESCR is becoming less of a vote about whether legislators truly believe taxpayer money should be used for embryonic research and more about political maneuvering. Right now we are barely able to sustain the veto override in the Senate and it appears that many Senators are being pressured to vote in favor of S. 5. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that you contact your Senators at 202-224-3121 and urge them to vote NO on this legislation. Please remind them that embryonic stem cell research is not currently against the law, but if scientists wish to experiment with a failed and immoral research method they should use private funds and not your taxpayer money to do it!

Talking Points for Your Senators:

  • The government should not fund research that requires the killing of living human embryos like S. 5 allows.
  • There are many types of stem cell research that are worthwhile and that do not raise ethical objections.
  • Already, humans with at least 72 different diseases and conditions have received therapeutic benefit from treatment with "adult" stem cells.
  • In contrast, embryonic stem cells have not been tested in humans for any purpose because of the dangers demonstrated in animal studies, including frequent formation of tumors.

Call your Senators today, and urge them to vote NO on S. 5! The Capitol Switchboard is 202-224-3121.

Sincerely,

The Legislative Department
