The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee voted S. 358, a bill that would prevent discrimination based upon genetic testing, out of committee last week. That places the bill one step closer to Senate passage. This bill will forbid health insurers and employers from requiring people to submit to genetic testing or from using the information about people's genetic make-up against them. However, the bill is inadequate as written because it does not prevent health insurers or employers from discriminating against unborn children based on prenatal testing. Before this bill is considered by the full Senate, language must be inserted to protect those children who cannot speak for themselves. Please call your Senators immediately (202-224-3121) and urge them to be sure the bill is changed prior to final passage on the Senate floor! Sincerely, The Legislative Department P.S.
