Dear Friends,

We are writing to urge you to take speedy action today to contact your senators and urge them to vote YES on "Amendment 20." The amendment would strike dangerous language about "grassroots lobby reform" from the overall lobby reform bill, S.1.

Barely a week into the first session of the 110th Congress, grassroots groups are being unconstitutionally and unfairly swept up in the net of a "lobby reform" reform bill (S.1) in the Senate. A dangerous provision buried in this bill (found in "section 220") would place severe registration and reporting requirements on grassroots organizations just like Concerned Women for America (CWA) and would make it far more difficult for groups like CWA to mobilize grassroots campaigns in the future.

In effect, this provision tries to silence groups like CWA and strikes at the very core of what you do as citizen activists.

But we have a chance to kill the "grassroots lobbying" provision!

Senator Bennett (R-Utah) introduced an amendment to S.1 ("Amendment 20") to strip the harmful provisions out of the bill. Republican Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) joined Senator Bennett as a cosponsor of this amendment.

Again, if the grassroots lobbying provision passes, it will be much more difficult for us to mobilize grassroots campaigns in the future, one of the key reasons you have asked to be on CWA's alert email list. The only way to kill the grassroots provision is to create one of the largest surges of grassroots support we've mounted in a long time. Essentially, this is a fight to make sure that we can continue fighting for family values.

Capitol Hill must be flooded with phone calls and emails.

Action Items:

  • Urge all senators to vote in favor of Amendment 20 which strikes the dangerous "grassroots lobbying" provisions from S. 1.
  • Please thank Senators McConnell and Bennett for their leadership to address these egregious provisions.

NOTE: If you have not already, please contact your representative and urge him or her to vote NO on H.R. 3, the destructive embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) bill. The House will vote today on this bill! We told you about this legislation last week. You can reach your Representatives at 202-225-3121. Your phone call to your Representative right now could make all the difference! Thank you.

Sincerely,
