Dear Friend,
The Senate will consider this week an agreement regarding bioethical issues and your help is needed to support and oppose two different bills.
- The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act of 2005 (H.R. 810). CWA opposes this bill. It passed in the House of Representatives over one year ago in a 238-194 vote, and is now up for consideration before the Senate. Sponsored by Senators Harkin (D-Iowa) and Specter (R-Pennsylvania), H.R. 810 would provide federal funding for the destruction of human embryos.
- The Fetus Farming Prohibition Act of 2006 (S. 3504). CWA supports this bill. It is sponsored by Senators Santorum (R-Pennsylvania) and Brownback (R-Kansas). The aim of the legislation is to prevent a science-fiction-like research environment in the United States where fetuses are created and destroyed in the name of research.
Take Action!
Tell your Senator that there are over sixty cases of success in humans using adult and cord blood stem cells, and there have been no reported successes from treatments using embryonic stem cells.
Please communicate that you support research that does not destroy human life as embryonic stem cell and fetus farming research does, but that you expect Congress to set strong ethical guidelines for the scientific community by voting against H.R. 810 and by voting for S.3504. Call today! If you'd like to send an email, simply enter your zip code in the box at your right.
